Baseline Assessment

June 2026

A desk-top baseline assessment of Caernarfon was completed in June 2026.
The assessment focused on the following area of interest:

• Town size and population;
• geology;
• topography;
• hydrology;
• heritage & statutory designations;
• environment & ecology;
• green equity & access; and
• below ground utilities.

The assessment derived preliminary opportunity areas within Caernarfon that could benefit or accommodate blue-green infrastructure (BGI) to provide benefits such as but not limited to water quality improvements, flood risk reduction, enhanced shading and placemaking opportunities.

Site Appraisal

June 2026

Site visits were undertaken by the Client as design team during week-commencing 22 June 2026.

The purpose of the site visits was to assist in the assessment of the preliminary opportunity areas and the formation of a BGI opportunity area long-list for Caernarfon.

The long-list of BGI opportunity areas is currently being processed.

Long & Short Lists

July 2026

The long-list of BGI opportunity areas has been developed and evaluated using a project-specific scoring matrix to assess and rank each identified opportunity.

The scoring matrix was structured around a range of assessment criteria, including the affected catchment, the potential benefits of interventions in reducing CSO impacts and downstream pollution, habitat creation and biodiversity value, and opportunities to improve public access to nature within each town and the surrounding area. It also considered deliverability factors such as technical feasibility, planning and land ownership.

The opportunity areas were independently assessed by EGY Design, OKRA, and Gwynedd Council, providing a balanced and objective appraisal. This systematic approach has enabled the long-list to be refined into a focused short-list, identifying the opportunity areas with the greatest potential and value for further development.

    Take Our Nature & Wellbeing Survey

    We're inviting everyone to take part in a short survey about their connection with nature in the local area.

    We'd like to understand how you use and experience local green spaces so we can work with communities to improve access to nature for both people and wildlife. Whether you're a resident, business owner, visitor or local stakeholder, we'd love to hear your views.

    Your responses will help us build a picture of how people value and interact with local green spaces before any improvement works take place.

    The survey will take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete, and everyone who takes part will have the opportunity to enter into a prize draw.
