A Cyngor Gwynedd project of blue-green infrastructure design across nine Gwynedd towns,
to support climate resilience and nature recovery.

What are we doing, and why

The project involves the design of blue-green infrastructure in selected locations across nine Gwynedd towns.

It is a direct response to the county's nature recovery and climate resilience plan, a commitment to slow and clean the water that runs through our streets, make more room for nature, and help communities stand up to a changing climate.

Each town is being looked at on its own terms. What works on a coast is not what works in the uplands. The result will be a set of designs across specific locations that are shaped around the character, the water, and the people of each place.

This website follows our design work as it develops. As opportunity areas are identiﬁed, appraised and then designs for each town take shape, you will be able to see the latest proposals, and keep up-to-date with opportunities to have your say.

What is blue-green infrastructure?

It is a way of managing rainwater using nature rather than fighting it with pipes alone.

Water is slowed, cleaned and put to use above ground, in features that also make a place greener and more pleasant to be in.

Slows the rain

Instead of rushing straight to the drains, rainwater is held back so it cannot overwhelm the system all at once.

Cleans the water

Soil and planting filter out pollution from roads and roofs before water reaches our rivers and the sea.

Room for nature

Rain gardens, trees and planted areas bring wildlife back into the heart of your town, creating shade and opportunities for rest and relaxation.

Room for people

Greener, cooler and calmer streets that handle heavy rain better and are nicer places to walk, sit and spend time.

Take Our Nature & Wellbeing Survey

We're inviting everyone to take part in a short survey about their connection with nature in the local area.

We'd like to understand how you use and experience local green spaces so we can work with communities to improve access to nature for both people and wildlife. Whether you're a resident, business owner, visitor or local stakeholder, we'd love to hear your views.

Your responses will help us build a picture of how people value and interact with local green spaces before any improvement works take place.

The survey will take approximately 5–10 minutes to complete, and everyone who takes part will have the opportunity to enter into a prize draw.
